Do your carpets look like the examples pictured above? My customers in State College, Pa are beginning to notice the carpet in the homes starting to ripple and wrinkle. If this is happening in your home you may find yourself asking "What Causes Carpet Ripples to Occur?", "Are Carpet Wrinkles Bad?" and "Does rippled carpet have to be replaced?" These are good and fair questions to ask and I would like to address each of them here.
What Causes Carpet Ripples to Occur?
While there are several reasons that carpet may begin to wrinkle (such as the humidity changing with the seaosns or the dragging of heavy furniture across the floor) there is one underlying root cause. That cause is improper carpet installation. Unfortunately, there are currently no standards or certifications required to perform carpet installations. As a consequence, many carpet retailers and home builders will subcontract the carpet install to whomever will do it for the lowest price. These subcontractors, in an effort to make up for their low price, may rush their work to complete as many contracts as possible. The problem for the customer is that evidence of poorly installed carpet may not be seen for month or even years later. Loose carpet in many cases will look just the same as properly stretched carpet for a period of several months or years until ripples and wrinkles begin to appear.
Are Carpet Wrinkles Bad?
At First, carpet wrinkles may seem like no big deal. However over time, as they get larger, not only will they develop into eyesores and trip hazards but they will also shorten the usable life span of your carpet. The cost of purchasing carpet for your home, or rental properties, can easily stretch into the thousands of dollars. Improperly stretched carpet will wear out much faster than it should robbing your investment of years of usable life essentially flushing money right down the drain.
